Discontinued

While we no longer carry the Ricoh Magio mini notebook, the core of the XCOM1, they may still be available at the Ricoh Website. The last we heard they were being discontinued. The P133 Hitachi Traveller, and IBM 235 are both the same design(both discontinued). We leave this information here because the XCOM1 design is still (as of March 15, 2000) the least expensive and easiest way to get into wearable computers. If you can locate a Magio, get an M1 and Twiddler and some Sony NP-F550 batteries, you'll be a cyborg in no time. As we have had a chance to test the XCOM1 over time, we have found that the large NP-F950 batteries, besides being a bit unweildy, put too much tension on the battery connector pins on the Magio causing them eventually to break off. For this reason we recommend making a battery pack out of the smaller NP-F550's (or equivalent). Our current XCOM1 derivative uses a 10x7x2 inch Plano plastic utility box available from Kmart or Walmart to house the Magio with the LCD removed, an array of 9 NP-F550 equivalent batteries and the M1 controller card. This works very well.

- Magio 166MMX mini-notebook (32m, 2.1gig, 3 pcmcia slots)

- TekGear M1 HMD (Standard or glasses mount version)

- Handykey Twiddler

- (2) Sony NP-F950 Lithium Ion batteries

- Magio extended battery bracket

- Power cable to power the M1 from the Magio

Advantages

- Tekgear M1 HMD is powered by the Magio (6.5 hours with two NP-F950's)

- Choose from M1 standard or M1 glasses mount version

- Use the 1200mAh batteries included with the Magio as backup

- Weight: 5.4lbs (Twiddler, M1GM, Magio, extended batteries, cables)

The M1 glasses mount is shown here with our prototype head mount. This head band uses both ears for vertical support. In our experience: the most comfortable head mounting option for the M1. 5/25/99

This page is for information only. The Ricoh Magio series has been discontinued and is no longer available from Extreme Computing. You may be able to purchase remaining Magio's from the Ricoh Website.

At 2.75lbs, with all standard ports built-in and the ability to house extended capacity batteries for a run time of up to 10 hours, the Ricoh Magio series offers an ideal integrated solution for wearable computing.

- PS/2, serial, and VGA ports are all located in a single cluster on the right side of the case reducing the cabling bulk.

- Battery doors are removable to house standard high-capacity batteries (example: Sony camcorder NP-Fxxx series). Each system has two internal batteries for true 'hot swap'.

- Easily convertible from wearable to desktop use and back.

- 3 PCMCIA slots and a USB port for maximum flexibility.

- PCMCIA slot is bootable. Use a solid state flash card to boot your operating system and get up to 2x battery life.

"Excellent! This is my second purchase with Extreme Computing. They are very efficient and send little extras that make it seem like Christmas!" - Robert M.

"This company has the best price for what I needed and it arrived safely in 2 or 3 days...I will shop with them anytime they have what I need...Thank you Extreme Computing!!!" - Della C.

"I think they are great!!! I had asked for additional info on compatability. Their answer was very complete and helpful. They ship when they say they will and follow up with confirmations and tracking numbers automatically. It is also apparent that their employees are proud of their company and their positve attitude shines through in their correspondence and in the the way their web site is written. The people I gave the gifts to actually said I shouldnt have gone through all that. If they only knew how easy it was." - Carolyn M. [See more.]
